Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

Yarra Valley Gateway Estate

Gateway Estate is only one hour from Melbourne, and is the first winery along the Maroondah Highway.

Since William Ryrie established the first Yarra Valley vineyard at Yering in 1838, the region has established and maintained an enviable reputation, producing some of the finest and most distinctive cool climate wines to be found anywhere in the world.

The Vineyard

The Gateway Estate vineyard was established in the early ‘90s with plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The entire vineyard is trellised using the Scott Henry method, an extremely labour intensive technique which few vineyards are prepared to commit to.

The vines are all lovingly hand tended and pruned, and grape yields are intentionally minimized in Gateway’s vineyards. This approach, combined with the Yarra Valley’s ancient clay loam soils and cool climate, produce fruit with excellent flavour intensity and beautifully balanced acids and sugars. Grapes are always hand picked to ensure optimum fruit condition is obtained.

Gateway produces a range of really “drinkable” wines, which can be enjoyed by themselves, but also compliment the lighter, fresher styles encountered in modern food.
